What Is a Hip Ultrasound?
Hip ultrasound is a painless, radiation-free imaging method for evaluating the hip joint and the surrounding soft tissues. It is used especially for assessing hip development in infants and for examining superficial hip problems in adults.

- ◆Developmental hip features (in infants)
When Is It Performed?
- ◆For developmental hip dysplasia screening in infants
- ◆Hip pain or restricted movement
- ◆When evaluation is needed after trauma
- ◆Suspected swelling or fluid around the joint
How Is the Examination Performed?
The patient is placed in the appropriate position and the hip joint is examined in detail with the ultrasound probe. The procedure is painless and is usually completed quickly. In infants, an ultrasound performed early in life is important for a reliable assessment of hip development.
