Thyroid nodules are very common in the general population, and a nodule can be detected on ultrasound in a large proportion of adults. However, not every nodule requires a biopsy.
The biopsy decision is not made based on the nodule's size alone. In the current approach, the ultrasound features are decisive.
Key criteria in the evaluation
- ◆The nodule's internal composition (solid or cystic)
- ◆Margin regularity
- ◆Presence of microcalcifications
- ◆Shape characteristics
- ◆Vascular structure and perfusion pattern
- ◆Risk classification systems (TIRADS)
Many nodules can be safely monitored with regular ultrasound follow-up. To avoid unnecessary biopsies, the evaluation should be performed by an experienced radiologist.
These assessments are based on an ultrasound examination performed by a radiology specialist. A detailed ultrasound evaluation carried out with an advanced ultrasound system and SMI technology can, when needed, be supported by a second-opinion ultrasound approach.
