What Is a Thyroid Ultrasound?
A thyroid ultrasound is an imaging examination performed to evaluate the structure of the thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck, and the features of any nodules. It is a painless, radiation-free examination that can be completed in a short time.
Our Approach to Thyroid Nodule Evaluation
Evaluating thyroid nodules involves far more than measuring their size. A nodule's composition, margin characteristics, internal structure, and vascularity must be assessed together. At our clinic, the nodule is examined live during the ultrasound and the findings are interpreted together with the patient's clinical history.
What Is Assessed During the Ultrasound?
- ◆Nodule composition (solid, cystic, or mixed)
- ◆Margin characteristics
- ◆Presence of calcifications
- ◆Relationship to surrounding tissues
- ◆Status of the lymph nodes
- ◆Microvascularization (SMI — Superb Microvascular Imaging)
